  1. Subject: EXPANDED RX / TX MOD FOR ALINCO DJ-S41
  2.  
  3.        Performing this modification will void any warranties.
  4.        All standard disclaimers apply. This mod is for the 
  5.        DJ-S41T, and not the DJ-S41(C) 10 mW version.
  6.  
  7.     1. Place the radio face down on a soft towel. This avoids 
  8.        scratching the display and gives you a place to put 
  9.        the seven tiny screws to be removed.
  10.  
  11.     2. Remove the batteries.
  12.  
  13.     3. Remove the three screws on the upper rear cover, and
  14.        the four screws inside the battery compartment. The
  15.        rear cover can be lifted and removed easily, as there 
  16.        are no wires to be concerned about. The antenna 
  17.        connection is made by means of a gold-plated spring 
  18.        contact.  
  19.  
  20.     4. Look for a small (about 1 mm) green surface mount 
  21.        resistor (actually a 0 ohm jumper), located on the far
  22.        left side of the exposed circuit board, located to the 
  23.        "northwest" of the speaker. There is a marking in white
  24.        letters, OP/CL, this resistor is over the top of the "P".
  25.        It is the only green component visible on the board.
  26.        (This radio does not have the traditional Alinco red 
  27.        and blue wires which have become so familiar...)

  29.     5. Carefully remove this resistor, using a small tip soldering
  30.        iron, tweezers and a steady hand. 
  31.  
  32.     6. Re-assemble the radio, being careful that the thin rubber 
  33.        gasket is seated around the inside edge of the rear cover.
  34.        Replace the batteries, press and hold the "F" button on the 
  35.        left side of the radio, and turn it on. The display should 
  36.        show all segments and markings. Release the "F" button and 
  37.        the radio will now be capable of operating from approximately 
  38.        425 MHz to above 470 MHz, depending on the VCO's tuning. 
  39.        The display will blink if the VCO is taken out of its range.
  40.        Re-tweeking of the VCO is not recommended.

  42.             THE NOT-SO-FINE PRINT:

  44.     7. Although reception on the expanded frequencies is legal, 
  45.        transmission is not. This unit is not FCC type-accepted
  46.        for anything but ham band (425 - 440.995 MHz) operation.
